  1. Cambridge has a McDonalds

but with that snooty attitude you are developing I doubt they would want you either

  2. Cambridge is a good goal. Now choose a major that they offer there and work toward that. Do all the projects that you can in that field, find work in that field, show that you really are interested in gaining the knowledge offered there.

  3. Have you contacted Cambridge?  Ask them.

At first, they too will send you the generic letter saying get good grades, that there are other valuable courses in life and so on.

Politely thank them for the letter, then write a more detailed request for how to get in, indicating, this time, your specific interests and showing how they, Cambridge, better than any other place, can help you with your interests.

Visit the place.  Meet someone.  But, beforehand, read up on the place, on the possible contacts and on what Cambridge does that is of such interest to you (yes, I know, this is like homework, but then so are a lot of things in life).

Recruiters do look at grades because, when they do not know the applicants, it is the easiest (and most accessible) information they can get about the applicant.  Anyone can write a nice letter with their applications.

However, very few applicants do show very specific interests ahead of time and take the trouble to find out why they want to apply.  In many cases, this counts (although, I do not know how Cambridge does it exactly -- all I can tell you is about our own experience at selecting applicants).

Oh, and do try to keep up the marks (we never totally ignored them)

  4. Continue to work towards your goal.  It's wonderful that you have something to work towards, just pease keep in mind that there are plenty of other colleges to fall in love with.  Keep and open mind and continue shooting for Cambridge.

If you are so concerned with getting in, consider taking extra time to study, or starting to do some voleenteering to make yourself look better on the application.
