  2. Josephine Baker

    bell hooks

  3. To clarify someone else's answer: Madam C.J. Walker was the first self made female millionaire (black or white).

  4. rosa parks? i am not sure if she is still alive.

  5. Rosa Parks is a good one !! Rosa Louise Parks was nationally recognized as the "mother of the modern day civil rights movement" in America. Her refusal to surrender her seat to a white male passenger on a Montgomery, Alabama bus, December 1, 1955, triggered a wave of protest December 5, 1955 that reverberated throughout the United States. Her quiet courageous act changed America, its view of black people and redirected the course of history.

  6. Maya Angelou - love her to pieces

    Iyanla Vanzant

    Whoopi Goldberg

    Kalfani Cox

  14. I've put a couple of links below that may be helpful.

While I agree with the names everyone has submitted, it might be difficult to get people such as Oprah or Michelle Obama to attend a conference unless arrangements are made many months in advance.

Other, less well known but still successful and inspirational women may be more able to speak at such an event, and also to show that you can be somewhat 'ordinary (e.g., not a tv star) and still be an achiever.

    Cheers :-)

  15. Oprah was seen with this novel.

Next thing, the novel sold more than 1 million and is a best seller.

    that should be influential enough..

  16. Sojourner Truth, who is turning over in her grave at what feminism has become, Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, Oprah's got to make the list...Condi, But bad, the Williams sisters and my wife and daughter...I bet you can be influential too

Okay, rebel F, I'll put Toni Morrison on mine too...though the Bill Clinton is black thing turned into a huge joke.  Maya Angelou makes it too.

  17. Oprah, Jennifer Hudson, Tacara (from americas next

top model), Tyra Banks, Condalisa Rice ... (all still alive)

Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, Indira Ghandi

    (i think they are?)

    hope i helped!

  18. Nichelle Nichols who played Uhura in Star Trek.

Just her music/acting career is inspiring. However, her role on Star Trek was a major inspiration to Blacks at the time...and she still is.

She didn't really like her role...she's a singer at heart...so when she was considering quiting, MLK Jr told her that by playing an officer on TV, she is doing something far more important than becoming another Black female singer. So she stayed.

Obviously, Blacks wrote tons of fan mail to Paramount (who made Star Trek), yet Paramount hid all the fan mail...apparently they didn't want Nichol to have any power...or they just didn't like a Black person to be on their show...or whatever.

Former NASA astronaut Dr. Mae C. Jemison was inspired by Nichols when she decided to become the first African American female astronaut.

Read the little imdb bio in the link below.

  19. Toni Morrison.  She's one of the greatest American writers ever, and as far as I know, she's still alive.

  20. 10 Oprahs and some clown that said Tyra.

  21. Oprah!!!

  22. Latifah

  23. Oprah Winfrey and Whoopi Goldberg are off the top of my head.

  24. Oprah

  25. Flo Jo.

Florence Griffin Joyner was a HUGE influence when she was in the Olympics, an overwhelmingly positive presence for women and for blacks without really pushing the idea. She was just awesome.

  26. Condeleesa Rice

    Dennis G

  27. Oprah

    Tyra

  28. Mrs. Martin Luther King

  29. Rosa Parks, Oprah, Tyra Banks, Janet Jackson,

  30. Madame C.J. Walker started her own company and became the first black female millionaire in the US.  She's dead now, but her products were used for years after she died.  I've always found her amazing and inspirational.
