Ive been off bc foe about 2-3 yrs and i had the patch and ortho-tricyclene lo. They both made me sick, depressed and I gained 40 pounds. I was thinking of an iud bc im 21 and dont want to have kids for quite sometime. I was considering mirena but bc it has hormones im afraid it will affect me again, so now im leaning more toward paragard but im afraid of the cramps and bleeding bc i already have heavy bleeding the first 2 days and bad cramps. Could anybody tell me their experience with iuds and the reasons why they chose one over the other?

  1. I choose Mirena, because I feared the heavy periods & cramps. I hear they calm down possibly by 6 months...? But I know Mirena's advantages over top the copper IUD's.

    Mirena, you get 5 years

    Copper, you get 10 years.

As far as weight gain, a lot of women transfer from the pill to Mirena, because there's much lessn hormones than there is with a pill.

In Mirena's FAQ, they also answer that question:

    http://mirena-us.com/faq.html?C=&c=

They said "Large studies have shown that Mirena® has no effect on weight gain"

I like how Mirena is also a flexible device, especially since I never had a pregnancy before. I was kinda scared of a hard device puncturing my uterus, which I hear happens (not often, don't worry).

That & I hate cramps!  lol, but it's nothing like the pill. I was on ortho tri cyclyn lo myself.
