In 1990 the life expectancy of males in a certain country was 62.7 years. In 1996 it was 65.6 years. Let E represent life expectancy and t represent the number of years since 1990.

E(t) = mt + b ... m = slope, b = y-intercept

E(0) = 0m + b = 62.7 .. . . b = 62.7

E(6) = 6m + b = 65.6

thus

6m + 62.7 = 65.6

6m = 2.9

m = (29/60)

E(t) = (29/60) t + 62.7
