  1. You can only pay a cheque into your own bank account if its made out to you! You are going to have to talk to them!

And no, you can't pay it into someone elses account either.

  2. You sound like you don't want to open a bank account.

It depends on the type of check you are receiving. I know for some life insurance proceeds and if its a sizable amount the insurance company will open an account in your name and you can draw the money out of the account as you need it.

If its some other kind of insurance I don't think they do this or if the amount is small.

You can always cash the check at the bank where the insurance company holds their account.  Take two forms of ID and you should be OK.

  3. I received a cheque as a refund from British Gas, I do have a bank account but I did notice that on the cheque it said it can be cahsed at any branch of the bank from which it is issued if you have 2 fomrs of ID

  4. Take the check to a bank and open a new account, depositing it into the account.

Yes you can sign it over to your son.

  5. 1.Endorse the back of the check-deposit into your son's account.

    2. Take the check to the same bank it is drawn on, endorse the back of the check and receive the cash.

**Hence the need for a bank account**  -sighs-
