  1. It has to do more with your body size and playing style than anything. If you are lighter, quick, and shifty than go with a sharper cut like 1/2", this will allow you to cut deeper into the ice and turn harder. That is probably the most standard hollow, and anything other than that probably won't matter much until you become a better skater. If you are a bigger player a deeper hollow will have you sink more into the ice creating more friction and thus will slow you down, so to prevent this you would want to go with a less deep hollow of 5/8" or so. For stopping less of a hollow would be better, but this might make turning more of a challenge. Goalies like dull or skates with less of a hollow so they can slide across the crease easier (3/4"). So as you said, it basically comes down to preference and your style of play.

  2. A smaller radius of hollow 1/4" ROH means that a blade will have edges with higher bite angles than a blade with a larger radius of hollow 1" ROH. The higher bite angles result in edges which penetrate the ice deeper increasing drag and requiring more energy to accelerate.

Begginers and recreational skaters should try an ROH of 5/8" or 3/4".

Better Glide - Skaters select higher ROH's (1" or higher) when they are looking for increased glide.

More Friction - Skaters choose lower ROH's (3/8" or lower) when they are looking for more friction and control.

    unless you're PAUL COFFEY

than you just buy a pair of skates & just use on the ice without sharpening them LOL

Here I got you the answer this time with diagrams too.

The less the hollow the easier to cheat, sharper skates/deeper hollows make it easier to fail if you are nor prepared to skate at that level.

  4. Smaller numbers are deeper hollows. So 3/8 is very deep, 3/4 is very shallow, and 1/2 is a very common hollow.

A different hollow will not help you with stopping- that has more to do with you. A deeper hollow will let you stop faster, but it will be more grippy and thus more difficult for people who are learning.

Goalie skates tend to have a shallower hollow then players, and the standard for players is 1/2. What you use will all be personal preference, but I would start with 1/2 and learn on that first before you try to customize your hollow.
