Please Help Me Understand Why People Insist On Papers For There Pet Dog?

If people are buying a dog to be there pet and are getting them spayed or neutered then why do they care about them being papered? I mean papers don't mean you are getting a good dog I would think that you would look more at the health of the sire and dam and the puppies. If you are not going to show them or breed them then why do papers matter??????

  1. They may not be going to show the dog but they may be going to do obedience and agility trialling with the dog, gaining various titles along the way.

I guess the registration papers are some form of a guarantee that the dog is actually purebred and you should be able to do some research on the lines to see if they meet your needs - conformation, temperament, health, etc.  Of course, you would do the research before you got the dog.

  2. Papers show the dog is purebred.

    Papers don't guarantee quality.

But the *absence* of registration papers from a reputable registry is a huge red-flag that the breeder isn't responsible/reputable.

    ADD:

RE: "some breeders sell pups WITHOUT papers as pets for less $$$$$$$$$$$$$$."

    > A reputable breeder will sell pets with limited registration and a spay/neuter contract. Not *without* papers.

    .

  3. Papers prove that the dog is purebred and shows who their parents are etc (Champions, imports etc) If you don't want to breed or show though then you most probably wouldn't need them.Without papers, the dog should be a lot cheaper :)

  4. Consider it written proof that the dog/puppy is purebred. I sell my pet quality puppies on a spay/.neuter contract. Only about 50% ever send their AKC papers in.  They can also research the dogs bloodline .

  5. I'm not really sure, but it does help to keep their parents background, their birth date is also on it.

  6. You are correct, papers guarantee nothing.

    BUT

A breeder needs to have those papers in order to show their dogs.  I will not buy a dog from a breeder who does not show in one form or another to prove their dogs and prove to me they know what they are doing, they give a c**p, and they are breeding for a justified purpose.  Not to mention they are PROOF of lineage.  I am interested in more than just the dam and sire, I want to see the lineage.

Therefor, it's pretty important in my book.

Also, if I decide to show my dog in obedience trials, I DO need those papers.

  7. Well, I plan on getting a dog (someday) and want it "papered" so I know the quality of the dog I have. I don't want to watch one of my dogs suffer from genetic defects again. If I get a papered dog, I will know a lot more about the dog, it's parents, and their history and have a much healthier dog than I have before!

There are a lot of good reasons, even if you don't agree with them.

I would never get a papered dog that hasn't had the parents hips tested, (among others things) and I would never get a dog that has a healthy background without papers-- they are BYB's either way.

  8. With the registration papers, you can get a pedigree this will help research what dogs are behind your dog and the health of the dogs lineage.

  9. LOL!! laughable isn't it?

a dog can pee on reg. papers as well as newspapers, so why should it matter?

i believe (correct me if i'm wrong) some breeders sell pups WITHOUT papers as pets for less $$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

i have mutts. i don't care about papers. and neither do my dogs. i'm very secure in my doggydom.
