Doug is a salesperson in a retail store and earns $72 per week plus 12% of his weekly sales. If Doug earned $240 one week, what were his sales that week?

  1. His sales for the week were $1400.

    The general formula is:

       Sales = Commission Amount / Commission Percentage

    Doug's commission amount was $168 ($240 - $72).

    So, with a commission percentage of 12% the math would be:

        x = 168/.12

        x = 1400
