I have just recently decided to lease a horse. I go riding in the afternoons around 4ish and it seems to rain every day at 4. Can someone please tell me how to improvise? I go riding 4 days a week. Normally on Saturday and Sunday morning and two days during the week.

  1. Riding in the rain seems like a lot of fun! As long as its not lightning/thundering or really muddy that there is a chance the horse could slip I wouldn't. Throw on a rain coat and have fun!

  2. Well, if you live in the West or South, 4ish is a hot time to ride. If you can, try riding earlier or later so it's cooler.

About the rain--- Check the forecast. If there's a chance for rain, Plan it for a different day. Can't? Don't ride that weekend!!

PS--- You can ride in a 5-minute rain. A little water won't hurt anything

  3. They make rain ponchos for saddles too. Just google or search a tack shop near you to find one. If not improvise. If it's the tack you are worried about, putting a trash bag or plastic paint sheet over the saddle will do.

However I do frown upon riding in the thunder and rain. Horses have a natural instinct to turn their backs to the hard rain, and prefer the comfort of standing still during a storm or with their herd. Taking this away from your lease could put yourself and him in danger if he stresses himself to much.

  4. I would get out of  the lease if possible. Try to lease a horse at a facility with an indoor arena.  Your limited time frame for riding leaves you too dependent on the weather to be without the indoor riding option.

  5. Do it anyway. Riding in the rain is better than no riding at all, I think!

  6. When you mention that you ride at 4pm my first concern is...what time does the horse eat its evening meal?  Never feed a horse right after you finish riding before the horse is thoughouly cool....colic....it would be MUCH better to feed the horse first and then ride.

I normally feed my horses around 5pm, take my time to groom after they finish and then ride one of my horses for about an hour.  I always brush down and put all my stuff away after I ride so that takes about another half hour.  I also have a yearling I'm working with that needs grooming and some groundwork so I do spend more time on a daily basis than most people do.  I try to ride every other day.

When I'm not riding I 'm cleaning the field or cutting grass.  Owning two horses is alot of work!  Of course, I also have 3 dogs, 3 cats, and 10 chickens!  And yes, I work full time!

But you know what?  This is what I've wanted to do my whole life and now I'm finally living my dream!

  7. You can buy a saddle cover. You can wear a poncho, and so can your horse.

I have riden in 2 hour rains. It is not that bad. At least you are riding
