  1. I'm a mom, and this is what I tell my son:  Do the big stuff first!  Get rid of the biggest piles, the big load of laundry, the big pile of blankets...  Its the fastest way to get the most done.  Just think of how many shoes you would have to move to equal 1 sleeping bag!  It will also show your mom that you're really working, and keep her off your back longer so you can move on to the smaller things!

  2. The most efficient way is to not let it become a dumpster and then clean. It never works! Get organised. See what makes your room most messy: clothes or random stuff. Keep a laundry basket in your room - throw the dirty clothes in there as soon as you take them off instead of letting them lie on the floor. Books: get a shelf. Put all books there as soon as you're done using them. For random annoying things, get a couple boxes/organisers in which you can just dump them. A bin is a good idea too, you won't have garbage and tissue all over the place!

  3. When your mom says, "Clean your room," she is actually asking you to organize it.  If your mom is anything like mine, she probably knows who to organize, but she failed to pass this skill--and it is a skill--on to you.

Look for big c**p cluttering up your floor: clothes, papers, etc.  Pick it up.  Throw away the paper because if you needed it, you would've looked at it by now.

For your dresser top, get out only the stuff you use all the time: keys, lip balm, lotion, etc.  Everything else is c**p.  Throw it away, except for the decorative things.  Maybe you could even throw the decorative things because if they had sentimental value, they would've be covered by c**p.

Make the bed.  Rooms always look cleaner when this is done.  Make sure that there isn't any clutter on it, too.

This should give your room a neater appearance.

  4. Biggest problem I've seen is not enough storage space.   If it looks neat, your folks will think it IS neat.

The best tip is to get a "captain's bed" with big drawers underneath.  You can load a ton of stuff into them.

Hang a big laundry bag in your closet for sports gear - you can just toss it in and close the door.

Get a big garbage pail with a cover - make sure all your food trash goes into it.  There is nothing worse for you or your folks than moldy food attracting ants and roaches.

Get a partitioned laundry sorter for clean / dirty but wearable / too dirty clothes.  That way you won't have to bother sorting your sox and underwear and t-shirts if you don't want to.  I hang all my shirts on hangers.  I'm lousy at folding, but I don't want them wrinkled either.

It's worth a little bit of effort to keep them off your back.
