Question:

Please Help With My BullFrog?

Tonight my family was in the pool and a baby bullfrog jumped in!

We caught him and put him in a bucket with some water and a rock.

How big should the tank be that I put him in?

Will he eat goldfish? ( I hate bugs )

Do I need a heat lamp?

Does anyone have any tips on care?

  1. [ Housing ]

Can be housed in a 10 gallon aquarium for now but of course bigger is better, so maybe consider a 20 gallon for when it grows and gets a bit bigger. Half of this should be a dry land area, and half should be filled with enough water that the frog can half submerge itself. Use pebbles under the water so it's not walking on glass. Most people use a cocopeat substrate for the dry end.

    [ Diet ]

Should consist of a range of insects (crickets, cockroaches etc), suitable sized feeder fish and when older - the occasional pinky mouse.

    [ Temperature ]

A comfortable temperature is around 75 - 80 F for bullfrogs, a little below won't hurt but try not to let it get to much hotter than this. So if its much colder you will need to set up a heat lamp and buy a thermometer so you can monitor this.

He will be fine kept alone, but consider letting him go again if you notice he is stressed or not eating, I would hate for him to die.

    Hope this helps!

  2. LET HIM GO!! IT'S VERY HARD TO GET A BABY BULLFROG TO EAT MINNOWS, OR ANY FISH. YOU WILL NEED A WINDOW NEAR THE TANK, NOT A LIGHT. LIGHTS CAN BURN THEIR BACKS, AND DEFORM THEM. ONCE A WEEK YOU SHOULD CLEAN HIS TANK. HIS TANK SHOULD BE AT LEAST TWENTY GALLONS. FILL IT 1/8 OF THE WAY WITH SAND, ADD A DISH OF WATER, AND YOU'RE GOOD TO GO.

P.S.- FEED THEM FLIES THAT YOU KILL WITH A FLY SWATTER.

  3. The tank should be big enough for the frog to move around and it should be dry on one side (u can use gravel or rocks to do so) and wet in the other. The water should cover at least half of the frogs body.

Yes, bull frogs will eat anything that will fit in their mouthes. in the wild they will eat fish, lizards, birds, etc...

The temp should be beween 78 and 84.
