one of my family members has two dogs 8 year old mixed breed and a 6 month old jack russel. the jack russel Gizmo is lovely. but the family member doesnt want Gizmo because the older dog attacked it and broke its leg! and the older dog hates Gizmo they havent toliet trainned him either now they are getting Gizmo killed! they are keeping the other dog.

im very very upset!!! i have found out today all of this i had no idea my family member would do such a thing! the family member said i can have Gizmo but i will have to pay for its leg. i have already decided im saving Gizmo no matter what!!! and i will use my savings to pay for his leg.

i have three problems

1.i do want to report the family member but i have been threated badly and other family members are arguing about i cant report them. im only young

2. my mum is refussing to have other dog because i have a yorkie already. and also because Gizmo isnt toliet trainned.

3. my boyfriend is searching for a dog

should i let him keep Gizmo? i know he would look after him and care for him. but his mum keeps changing her mind about having a dog i dont know if she will say yes. yet again because he isnt toliet trainned.

or should i take him to a rescue centre? im terrified that they will ask questions and that i will be found out by the family member. and also if they will put Gizmo down, i really dont want that! i want Gizmo to be happy.

i really dont know what to do please help any advice

thanks so much.

  1. If taking Gizmo will create problems with your mom, then maybe that isn't the best solution. Having your boyfriend take him may be tricky and create future family problems.

Get Gizmo's leg fixed first thing---he can't go long with a broken leg without risking complications.  See if your family members will share the cost with you---after all they ARE legally responsible for the dog right now.  You might want to tell the family members that if they don't fix the broken leg they could be charged with animal cruelty and neglect. Even if they aren't going to fix the leg, then they can't delay going to a vet. Bringing in a dog with a leg that has been broken for a week and asking to put it to sleep is NOT a good thing and would be considered abuse.

Maybe if they understand that there are negative implications for them they will meet you part way.

BTW A vet who is asked to put down a healthy young dog because the owners don't want to pay to fix the leg is not likely to do it. The vets I know would take the dog and have the owners sign it over to them. They would fix the leg and try to find the dog a home themselves or give it to an adoption group or shelter once it was getting better.

The best bet for this dog would be a rescue group---particularly one that specializes in JRTs. They could take care of him while he recuperates and housebreak him and then find him a home with someone who understand the breed.

Try contacting  a rescue group near you and see what they suggest. If they have a relationship with a nearby vet they may be able to work something out. If they are willing to take the dog with a broken leg, ask your relatives to sign him over.

If by "rescue centre" you mean what I would call a shelter, then bringing him there would be okay too. But they would ask questions. If you are pretty young they would probably agree to take him and back off with the questions if you say you're afraid of your family.

I think you're concern for this poor dog is commendable and I hope you'll be able to find a way to save him without creating a huge nightmare for yourself.

    Best wishes.

  2. Hopefully your boyfriend can have Gizmo. If not take him to a breed rescue. Whatever get that poor little darling out of that house.

If you have to go to the breed rescue with him make sure they know what happened. They can deal with the family members.

Thank you so much for doing all you can to save this poor little dog.

  3. Please call a Jack Russell rescue right away.  They will take care of this animal and make sure it finds it's forever home.  Please do it now.

  4. Look for a rescue center in your area - on that is a no-kill rescue.

Go there or call ahead, and explain the situation - but make sure before you take the dog, that they will take it in and care for it.

You can also try to contact Jack Russell Rescue - there are many of them, usually all full, but you may get lucky - try looking them up in your area and calling them.

It sounds like your safety is at risk, so if you can find a place for the dog, that si probably a better thing to do than to keep it - if you kept it and your family was still fighting over it, it sounds like there could be bigger problems ahead.  There may be still, and if so, I hope you will contact a shelter for yourself and whomever else might be in trouble -

A good rescue will help the dog, and have the facilities and foster homes to do so - hopefully you can find one with some room.

If you live in the US, you can look up shelters on Petfinder.com, or you can Google "Jack Russell rescue" for listings of breed rescues to call.

But in this case, it sounds very much like it would be safer for you to find the dog another place - and maybe yourself as well...

      Good luck-
