  1. I won't write the whole letter for you, but here are some tips.

    Your first paragraph should state

    1) who you are; and

    2) what job you are writing about (be as specific as possible--not just "the cafeteria job," but "cook," "server" or whatever).

The next thing to say is why you think you are qualified.  ("I have worked as a _____  for ___ years with ____."  Or, "I graduated from the _____school/training program, where I Iearned how to _____." )  If you don't have anything specific in your background, at least state why you would be good at this job.  ("I love working with children, and I am eager for an opportunity to help them get a wholesome meal at school," or something like that.)  The emphasis should be on what you can DO, not merely on the fact that you need a job.

Then, ask for an opportunity to meet with the person who doing the hiring.  It is always important to "ask for the next step," which means you should end your letter with something specific that the *reader* should do (call you for an interview).

Keep the letter short.  A couple of paragraphs is plenty, especially if  you have a resume as well.  And make sure someone reads it over for good grammar and spelling.  When applications come in, the person hiring is looking for ways to eliminate some of them.  He or she doesn't want to interview 30 people.  One way to eliminate applications is to find ones that have lots of typos and bad grammar. (It shows that the writer wasn't being careful, and who wants an employee who isn't careful?).

I hope this helps.  Good luck on the job!!
