write a linear equation for a line that goes through (5,-8) and (-9,-8),

I'm pretty good at math and did this problem but can't figure out where i went wrong because my answer just isn't making since. Can you do it with the steps so I can figure out what I messed up please?? If i see the right answer I will find my mistake.

  1. You need to firstly find the gradient- which is m.

    m=(y2-y1)/(x2-x1)

    m=(-8-[-8])/(-9-5)

    m=0???

    Then use the point gradient formulae.

    y-y1=m(x-x1)

    y-[-8]=0(x-5)

    y+8=0

    I got y= -8

    I'm not sure whether this is what you got, but this is what i got.

  2. 1. find the slope of the equation.

    -8 - -8 = 0

    -9 - 5    14

    Because you have a zero on top its going to be a horizantal line. the equation turns out to be y= -8 because the y values are both the same :-)

  3. First draw yourself a line going through these two points

    You can see, then, that the y value stays the same at -8

    no matter what the x value is.

    So the equation is :

    y = - 8

  4. the slope is 0 since the line is horizontal and goes through the same y points and y2-y1/x2-x1 = 0

    so the equation is y=-8
