My birthday is just around the corner, and I am wanting to go to Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point) with my husband, my brother, and his fiance. However, I just wanted to get some information about booking the trip.

1) Obviously, we want to go to bars, what is the legal age to drink in Mexico?

2) Do we need passports to get into mexico (my parents didn't need one a year ago, has this changed?)

3) How old do you have to be to book a hotel room in Mexico?

4) How much is it for Mexico car insurance?

Great! I think that's everything I was wondering about.

  2. 1 - I believe its 18. Be on your guard in the bars though because some people may try to take advantage of young Americans. Definitely avoid drinking water if you can help it! (unless it's bottled) The water's likely to make you sick.

2 - If you are flying, then yes. I think the cut off date for not having passports to walk/drive across is quickly coming like in the next week or two, so it's in your best interest to get passports either way. They've reported processing times are back to normal, though I wouldn't be surprised if it takes more than a month. There is a new law that has come into effect since last year, so yes your parents did not need them, but you will.

3 - 18, and own a credit card. The person that books the room should be there to check in and out.

4 - Looks like it runs the gambit from 46 dollars to 88 dollars, depends on the type of car, and coverage you get as well as the age of the drivers, whether anyone under 21 will be driving more specifically.

I'd see about getting things booked at a travel agency.  Also, most places take travel checks which could be nice to have as if they are lost or stolen, then there is no money actually lost. Also, it might be good to have any credit card's number (an overseas number) to report theft just in case it happens.

To foreigners, American passports are like hot pockets, blink and they are gone, so definitely keep them close to you at all times, and never leave them in hotel rooms, even if it's just for a moment to go over to a friend's room.

Make multiple copies of everyone's passports enough to pass out a copy of each passport to each person to take and keep safe. So everyone will have a copy of everyone else's passport as well as their own. Also, keep a copy of everyone's passport with your parents. This will help to expedite things with the American Embassy should anyone lose their passport.

And lastly, have a fun trip!
