  1. -3 15/16

  2. First, forget about the negative sign.

Convert 9/2 into sixteenths, which is 144/16.

Now, remember that adding a negative to a number is just like subtracting that number.

So, the problem is basically, 9/16 - 144/16.

Once you pass zero, your answer becomes negative.

When I get to zero, I still have 135/16 left, so my answer becomes

    -135/16.

Now simplify this by dividing 135 by 16, which is 8 with a remainder.  I divided on a calculator so my remainder was a decimal.  To find it as a fraction, I can multiply 16 by 8, and subtract the product from 135:

    16 x 8 = 128

    135 - 128 = 7.

So the answer is  - 8 and 7/8, or negative eight and seven eighths.

It's not as complicated as it sounds.

  3. -63/16

  4. 9/16 + (-9/2)

    =(9+(-9 * 8))/16

    =(9-72)/16

    =-63/16

    =-3.93

  5. 9/16 - 9/2=

9/16 - 72/16= because you need to get the denominators the same first

    -63/16=

  6. 9/16 - 72/16 = -63/16
