Info:

6 year old AQHA gelding

16.1 hands

Ridden/Trained/Shown in Hunter/Jumpers

Diet: One flake good quality Alfalfa AM

One flake good quality oat mix forage PM

Approx 2lbs (one scoop) Safe Choice after each work out

Exercise:

Kept in large (1 acre) pasture

Worked 6 times a week for 1 hour ridden hard (training)

Ridden between workouts on trail, at beach etc to keep him from getting bored

The vet came out recently, and I thought it would be interesting to compare what he said vs. what you guys think. I know none of you are likely trained DVM's but I'd like your opinions.

What do you do to put weight on your horse before winter?

This is my horse, he isn't for sale so I'm not asking about that, and please, I am a very experienced horse person, so no rude/silly comments. :)

All other comments/suggestions welcome!

  1. Sounds and looks like a healthy horse. MAY I ASK WHY YOUR ASKING YAHOOANSWERS THIS QUESTION IF YOUR AN EXPERIENCED HORSE OWNER AND HAD THE VET CHECK HIM OUT? I would keep him with other horses and I think the oat mix forage is like sweet feed but if not, I would put him on a protein supplement like sweet feed for more energy since you ride him for one hour HARD. WELL HOPE THIS ANSWERED YOUR QUESTION.

P.S Were you just trying to get attention since you already know he is fine?

    ♥ hope this helped ♥

  2. He's Gorgeous! Is he a buckskin? I love buckskins, in fact my mare is a buckskin. He looks healthy to me! Maybe he could gain a bit of weight to bulk out a little, but overall he's gorgeous!

  3. he actually looks on the heavy side, just a little. his health and looks are nice looking though. he is handsome   :)

  4. well it sounds as if he has plenty of hard feed to keep his weight up, but if he loses condition in winter try increasing his bulk .e.g hay/haylage increase. also a great feed that has been tried on our horses is called 'equilibra' its specially formyuated to give that extra bit of conditon. you only need to add up to 1 cup to a normal feed and the results are brilliant. good luck with your horse. he sounds lovely.

  5. He's cute! Weight looks good to me, just keep an eye on it. And I am incredibly jealous that you can take your horse to the beach, that sounds like so much fun!

  6. B-E-A-Utiful, horsie! Looks like he could stand to gain a little. But otherwise he's gorgeous! As far as putting weight on him, I'd give him an extra flake in the afternoon, but only on days that he is worked hard. Hope this helps.

P.S. Jeez. Someone needs to take a chill pill! Who cares if she is trying to get attention or not, she's excited about her horse -- it's not bad that she wants to share!

  7. he is really pretty and he looks healthy maybey a tiny bit skinny but i am no vet so thats just a guess

  8. OMG YOUR HORSE IS GORGEOUS!  i think he looks good and healthy. The only think id that his coat could be a bit shinier and alittle bit fatter. maybe try de worming your horse a abit! Thiss will improve the weight situation and make the coat shinier

  9. The only true "flaw" I see is he is pretty long.

    *He is a pretty color.

*Good weight...but personally think he needs more muscle in his hind end and shoulder (in the top pictures in the bottom he looks good)

*Umm...this is just an opinion, but he seems "blah" (for lack of a better word) like in alot of the pictures he is just like."La Dee Daa...just standing here" he doesn't look very perky or full of personality. My hose has a ton of personality, and most of the time you can just see a little "spark" in his eyes...like he is curious about EVERYTHING!

Maybe your horse just isn't photogetic...I just don't see anything "special" in him, but if he WAS for sale I would deffinetly take a good look at him in person because he seems like a good show horse.

Hope that gave you an insight of some sort :)

** Don't EVER EVER EVER feed your horses sweet feed...it is cheap for a reason. I rots quicky, anything SWEET isn't good for a horse, and I have sooo many stories about bad sweet feed and horses. Feed him Senoir if you are parinoid...just because its name says "Senoir" doesn't mean you can only give it to senoir horses lol...it is VERY good for horses, expecially ones who are working alort/don't gain alot of weight :)

    Hope this helps :)

  10. Nice horse.  Does he have any hoof or leg problems?

  11. ohhh what a pretty horse

    i think he sounds perfect

i have no idea how much he weight but overall he/she sounds healthy
