"Diffusion". Looking up "expiration" in dictionary it reads: (1) the act or process of releasing air from lungs through nose or mouth.

It follows with (2) EXHALATION: the escape of carbon dioxide from the body protoplasm (as through the blood and lungs or by DIFFUSION).

My questions concerning this are: Does CARBON DIOXIDE escape in other ways than through lungs?

And, What is DIFFUSION?

  1. Diffusion is the transfer of gases across the lung membrane into the blood stream. It is measured during a Pulmonary Function Test by a test called a DLCO test.  It tells the Dr how well the oxygen moves across the alveolar lung membrane into the blood stream and then the carbon dioxide is moved back across into the lungs from the blood stream to be exhaled.

  2. Hi dear friend..

It's great u like to know about interesting things like this..

dear diffusion is a general word that means the escape of any gas from place to another... for lungs it means the CO2 exhalation out from the lungs.. the word diffusion in the definition of exhalation means that like some undeveloped creatures like bacteria may do respiration by diffusion of gases through their membranes or some animals through their skin!!

    for more information wikipedia it..

  3. Diffusion is the process by which gases like O2 and CO2 are transferred across tissue boundaries.
