I have a cotton sari with a gold border....I have sent such saris to the dobie in the past when I was staying in India, and unfortunately it ruined the gold border, as I was warned.

But can I wash such saris myself in cool water with mild soap / detergent without making the border all scruffy?

Or should I simply send it to the dry cleaners ?

Thank you for your time and advice

P.S. I assume this also applies to silk saris with a gold border ... is this true: that you cannot wash them in cold wash? Thank you again x*x

  1. Do not wash own.

Send it to dry closest cleaners.

  2. Hi,

Please do not take a chance to wash them in cold water. Send them for dry clean after wearing t thrice. The day u wear the saree, remove it and dry it turning ulta in sun at 12pm.

    Try this!!!

  3. No to the silk sari because even hand washing destroys the integrity of the fine silk fiber.  However, I have laundered gold embroidered and beaded saris by hand and here is how I did it.  Use a lingerie wash like Cold Water Wash because it won't leave a detergent residue and is gentle enough not to tarnish the gold.  I fill my tub up with cool water, agitate in the detergent and lay the sari out lengthwise.  Let it soak for about 20-30 minutes but treat any stains first and then let it soak.  If you have grease stains or deodorant residue, use a dish soap worked into a lather to penetrate the fiber.  Drain the tub.  Run the water on cool to rinse the garment.  Lay out a large terry bath sheet and place the sari on top.  Gently roll the sari into the towel squeezing as you roll.  I hang mine to dry after squeezing out most of the water then hubby irons it.  Depending on the fabric content, you might have to treat it with magic sizing to restore the fiber body.
