What will happen to the period (time for a complete swing) of a pendulum if the supporting arm is shortened?

A. The pendulum’s period will shorten.

B. The pendulum’s period will be longer.

C. The pendulum’s period will remain unaffected.

D. The pendulum will stop swinging immediately.

When there is friction in a system, what happens to the entropy?

A. The entropy decreases.

B. The entropy increases.

C. The entropy does not change.

D. The entropy may increase or decrease depending on the type of friction between two surfaces.

What happens to the gravitational potential energy (GPE) of a falling object in relation to the kinetic energy (KE)?

A. The GPE increases and the KE increases.

B. The GPE decreases as the KE increases.

C. The GPE decreases and the KE decreases.

D. The GPE increases as the KE decreases.

  1. Notice that the period T depends on the length of the pendulum directly. As L gets larger, so will T.

L = length of the pendulum arm in metres (or feet)

T = period (time for one full swing) in seconds

    So,  A.  for #1.

Looks like others have answered the others, so good luck on them being right!

  2. A. The pendulum’s period will shorten.

    B. The entropy increases.

    B. The GPE decreases as the KE increases.

  3. A, B, B.  100% sure on all 3 counts.

For the first question:  Lengthening a pendulum will increase it's period; shortening it has the opposite effect.

2nd question:  One of the Laws of physics states that there will always be a net increase in entropy of any system.  And friction is an unavoidable force.  And, because friction produces heat, that indicates entropy.

3rd question:  As an object falls, it comes closer to the earth.  Therefore, its potential energy will go down (as it has less distance to fall the closer it gets to Earth) and its kinetic energy goes up as it continuously speeds up.

  4. 1) A - 100%

    2) B - 100%

    3) B - 100%

    Hope this helps.
