1. Jeet Kun Do was his own system. It was called unbeatable at one time, but MMA in America has proved that completely wrong. I've personally seen Jeet Kun Do beat twice in a row at "King of the cage". Jeet Kun Do pratitioners have a hard time with Mixed Martial Arts fighters period. What made Bruce Lee so unique was simple it was called "Hollywood" and Chuck Norris was no different. Other than the Fact that Norris was a IKA "middleweight" champ in real life although I may have his weight class wrong, it's been since the early 1980's since I've seen any footage on Norris's times in the ring though. I've never been big on Chinese arts what so ever, but I will not knock them. I will say this much though. Japan walked into China during it's invasion of China rather easily in 1937 and faced no resistance what so ever. I think that speaks volumes for Japan in general as well as all of their their martial arts being that all things to do with war are "martial". When I watch "Kung-fu movies I laugh so hard I almost cry. I never did like Bruce Lee movies even when I was a kid because of my studies in Japanese arts. I'm a die hard "Show me don't tell me" kind of guy. So far Japan's arts have proven them self time and time again while China's arts are more for stage theatrics and hollywood film. Think of China this way..There's Japan's warrior class known as the Samurai who's clan's battled for thousands of years who's most noble leaders held lands, titles and lordships and then there's Little nameless Chinese guys with spears following behind just one little Genghis Khan.

  2. his fighting style was Jeet Kune Do ( the way of the intercepting fist) this was a very unique martial art that

Bruce Lee invented himself. unlike other martila arts it is based on attack rather than defence and the main object is when your apponent throws an attach you must be quick enough to get a hit in befere his hit, hit's you therefore intercepting his attack. but this MA is not for everyone only people who are INCREDIBLEY fast and amazing fast reflexes i guess thats why Bruce Lee is so good at this

    MA he is sooo fast.

  3. Come on are you serious?

Have you NOT searched Bruce Lee on the web or picked up any of his books?

Would you rather absorb your belief based on other peoples opinions without having on of your based on Bruce's writings directly?

  4. Bruce lee didn't practise one style he practised many styles such as karate, kung fu..... but dont be so selfish i mean in the end when you see him on TV or a movie most of his moves are acting like any actor but i don't mean that he doesn't know anything about martial arts

  5. Wing chun is the style he was taught in China, though his training was incomplete. After he moved to America he looked into briefly other styles like karate and boxing. But after awhile in the states he developed a philosophy known as Jeet Kun Do. This isn't a complete style but a collection of thoughts Bruce had while tripping out. Many have combined it with an existing style as a marketing ploy.

Bruce Lee's greatness came from his speed (repetitive training) and the fact he came to America while Eastern Martial arts was developing there.

  6. Bruce developed a system of combat known as Jeet Kune Do or the Way of the Intercepting Fist. It's success is about its directness and its ability to focus on economic concepts which cut out waste and develop (ideally) automatic response.

What made Bruce unique was a mixture of his own innate talent in martial arts plus his ego. He wanted to be famous and he used his martial arts talent to get there. This brought fame to his art as well as himself. Another prime aspect was his lack of concern for tradition which at that time was unusual.

Lol- that's the funniest thing I have heard for a long time bud.

"but MMA in America has proved that completely wrong. I've personally seen Jeet Kun Do beat twice in a row at "King of the cage". Jeet Kun Do pratitioners have a hard time with Mixed Martial Arts fighters period."

Have you not heard of the Straighblast Gym? they come from a JKD background and have had great success in MMA. Eric Paulsen? I'm pretty sure that there are more JKD fighters who have wins under their belts than there are 'American Combat System' fighters. No offence meant. I've trained in LA many times over the years including training in BJJ and many BJJ students also practised JKD. Here in the UK, I see lots of fighters coming from JKD based clubs my own included.

Your view of the history of Asia is pretty fragile too. The Chinese had an effective advanced civilisation way before the Japanese but quite what this had to do with anything I don't know. The Japanese and Mongol empire were both aggressive warring nations eager to expand their domain due to the needs of the people. China was so huge it didn't. If you check your history you'd find out that Japan was almost invaded by Genghis Khan but his fleet was all but wiped out by a major storm. Japan has always said this was their victory but recent research shows it was due to the storm.

With all due respect, I hope your own devised system is better researched and less biased than what you've written here.

    Edit:

How many times must we see this stuff about JKD not being a style but a concept or philosophy??

Bruce devised a martial art which suited his outlook. Fact. It was his way of fighting, his ideas. He formulated these ideas and taught them. HE TAUGHT THEM. How can you teach an 'idea'? Bruce laid down the curriculum for Seattle, Oakland and LA schools. Where people were taught Bruce's way of fighting. His way of punching, his way of kicking, his way of moving and theory of interception, etc. These syllabus still exist people are still practising the teachniques and theories that Bruce taught them. QED. Bruce saw what was happening to his art in LA (note: LA alone) and didn't like it and so, knowing he was not going to be able to teach and keep an eye on his schools and what was being taught he told his three instructors to close commercial schools. However, at that time there was only ONE commercial school - LA. He knew that Taky in Seattle and Jimmy in Oakland had classes which weren't commercial and they continued completely normally. Most people teaching original JKD are quiet modest people who aren't in it for the money in any way and teach alongside holding down jobs *(unless retired). People like Bob Bremer, Dan Lee, Howard Williams, Tim Tackett and a number of others teach the art that Bruce taught. His PHILOSOPHY continues to guide them to improve and refine what they have studied but their art is JKD. In my life in martial arts and while working as an MA writer I have been lucky enough to talk to many of Bruce's students and family and was blessed to be a student of his senior Oakland student, Bob Baker. Now if you want to tell me that Linda Lee, Bobby Baker, Taky Kimura, Steve Golden, Tim Tackett, Bob Bremer, Dan Lee, Howard Williams, Gary Cagaanan, Dave Cox and many others all are liars, misguided, confused then so be it. I know where I would lay my belief. Try getting a look at Tommy Carruthers and see how he demonstrates JKD 'philosophy' or 'ideas' and then tell me (and him) how that differs from any other martial art. Please guys.... lay off this 'it isn't a martial art' stuff. Bruce made these comments in the early seventies when he was more interested in acting and was despondent with how his art was being presented in LA and feared for how it could be abused.

  7. What JM said. It is fact. I'm one of the few old enough on this site to actually remember first hand.

Bruce studies Wing Chun under Ip Man in Hon Cong. It influenced his fighting style. His fighting style worked exceptionally well for him because he had much longer than average arms.

He was also some how driven to prove himself. This may have contributed to his early demise.

I do not say this to demean him in any way. He is indeed one of the giants in martial arts whose shoulders we stand on today. With that said truth is important as well.

  8. Bruce Lee combined Wing Chun, Fencing (footwork) and boxing to formulate Jeet Kune Do which is not a style but an idea

  9. It's amazing to see what some people believe to be fact.

One, Karate came from Kung Fu.

Two, 13 monks defeated a hundreds of Samurai unarmed.

So the BS about Japanese being better is an opinion based on ignorance.

As Far as Bruce goes, I'm glad to see there are people who realize JKD is not a style, but a philosophy.

Bruce started in Wing Chung. He met Ed Parker and began Kenpo Karate. While teaching for Ed Parker Mr. Parker noticed he went outside the Kenpo curriculum. Rumor has it Ed got mad and kicked him out. Far from the truth. He told him he needed to do his own thing and helped him finance his own school where he came up with his own methodology of teaching. He trained with Gene Labell and many other artists in other styles developing his own way of fighting and encouraged his students to do the same. He said it was form without form, but there was no JKD style.

After his death some unscrupulous people used his philosophy in order to mass market a style that did not exist. Bruce Lee was a Mixed Martial Artist before they had a name for it, along with Ed Parker, two similar, but opposite means to the same end, a flow of all phases of fighting.
