  1. asking your vet would be the best answer. but with some chickens we hatched we fed them baby bird food formula (you have to force feed some of them) and when they get a little older, you can feed them mashed, warm oats. but they need protein so make sure you don't feed them bland items like that too long.

  2. I am not to sure about the quails so you need to call a pet store.

  3. Baby birds take a while to absorb the last of their yolk, so you'll have about a day before they will actually start looking for something to eat. Use this time to find the kind of food they should be eating.

Note to the misinformed bird people: not ALL birds eat formula! Quail and other game birds are *precocial*, meaning they can walk and run shortly after birth, and they eat basically the same thing the adult birds do. They do not wait around in a nest for the parents to bring them food, and they do NOT need formula. Mike, do yourself a favor and feed them what they were meant to eat. Ideally you should offer them game bird feed, although feed made for baby chicks (which can be found at just about any feed store) can be used if you can't find feed for game birds. Shelled seed is okay for finches but quail and other ground birds don't generally eat this, they go for grains, which is what game bird/chicken feed is made from. This is easier and safer for you and your new covey anyway--trying to hand-feed a bird formula can hurt or even kill it if you don't know what you're doing. For birds that do need to be hand-fed, it's generally a good idea to take it to a vet or breeder who knows how to do it safely. Hand-feeding a bird who doesn't need it is not only dangerous, it is also foolhardy.

  4. I strongly suggest that you call the nearest wildlife rehab center, zoo, or other facility that handles wild animals.  They will be able to give you the proper information that would assist you in raising these chicks.  In the meantime, keep them in a warm and dark environment.

Wish you the best of success!

  5. First of all, you have a couple days before they'll die. Right before birds hatch they eat the egg yolk, which is all the food and water they need for up to 48 hours. Finch food is the wrong choice. Go the the feed store and get some game bird starter. Also, put some marbles in their water dish so they don't drown. Good luck with your chicks.

  6. You should not be hatching if you don't know what you doing.

Raising baby birds is one of the hardest things.  First thing you need to know is you need special formula.  And if the temperatue of the formula is off by only a few degrees the babies will die.  Its expensive and very time consuming. They need to eat EVERY hour 24/7..that means through the night. You need to go to a petshop that has baby bird formula and stuff, this is not easy.  You don't know what your doing I suggest you take the eggs to a petshop that raises birds.
