  1. For a true valuation you would need to go to a luthier because although you can estimate a price, it is very different to each instument because of tone, quality when made and if indeed it is genuine. Hope this helps


  2. Hard to tell without looking at it.  But if its dated 1768 it can't possibly be a genuine Jacob Stainer, as Jacob Stainer lived between 1617-1683. IOW, its a copy.

    According to luthier Steve Perry, copies of Stainer violins were made in vast numbers over many decades from the middle of the 19th Century.  Steve says: "I don't believe I've seen a commercial Stainer copy going for over $2000, and most are much less expensive."
