of tax law. My husband died and I found out that he had not paid either his taxes nor mine for awhile. We had one joint file of which I owe five-thousand dollars. But what is worse he owned a small company that he did not pay taxes on for a few years. LONG STORY SHORT he owned almost one-hundred thousand dollars back taxes. I consulted some one with tax law knowledge and they told me that since I was not listed as a partner nor did he ever list his company as LLC I was not libel for the debts he incurred. ANYONE PLEASE. Thank you for thaking the time to stop and read my question even if you cannot help.

We lost our home a few years back and I am wondering if perhaps I should start hiding our savings?

  1. You need professional advice, not Yahoo advice.

  2. Lauren, this isn't something to try to do yourself.  I'd look for an enrolled agent in your area to help you through it.

But to your last question, I wouldn't try to hide assets.  The IRS is very good at ferreting things like that out, and that could just get you into MORE trouble.

    Good luck.

  3. It is impossible to answer you question fully without more information about your husband's business, what kind of taxes and what state you live in.  You probably are just liable for the tax due on the joint return.  I handle problems like yours professionally.  If you can provide details outside this forum, you can email me by clicking on my profile.

  4. You signed the tax return so you are equally responsible for the taxes. If you filed taxes separately then you would not owe his taxes. If you are in a community property state that complicates matters. You really need to see a lawyer.
