I am a student of ninth class and I am having a great difficulty in Physics. Neither do I have any tutor to teach me this subject. Please can anyone give me a detailed lecture on the topic of equilibrium in very easy words. Please explain torque, couple(the couple in physics), and the topics related to equilibrium. You can also tell some website which explains these concepts clearly. Please help me for this. It is very important because I am preparing for my board exams. And also wish me good luck (:

  1. Torque -It is the rotating effect produced by a force. For eg,when you open or closse a door, you are applying torque.

Couple-When you have two equal forces, parrele to each other but opposite in direction, they constitute a couple.Like while closing a tap or steering a vehicle.

For forther basic things, please refer to your book!!!!!

  2. Equilibrium means that the forces balance out, and the couple (a torque) is zero. In basic terms, this means the SUM of all forces is zero, and the SUM of all moments (couples/torques) is zero. In laymans terms, the object will neither move nor rotate.

    Now lets talk about torque.

Torque is basically distance (perpendicular) times force. Torque is what causes an object to rotate.

  3. equibrium is the state at which the body is at rest and is completly balanced i.e the algebric sum of all forces acting on body is zero ... this means that all forces are contradicting with the net effect that net force becomes zero

e.g if a body is held at rest in your hand then it is in equlbrium b.w the gravity which is pulling it down and the force applied by your hand which is pulling it up ,since both are balanced so it stays at rest

Torque -> torque is a force causing a twisting movement i.e it is a force causing a body to rotate

couple -> when a body is act by two toque in opposite direction at some distance then these forces form a couple
