can rats have sezures? The other day one of my rats just started jumping around his cage quite violently and then after a few seconds he just stopped and stared into space. I called him and he didnt respond,i rattled his treat box (normally he gets excited) but still nothing. Then after about 5 mins he was back to normal like nothing had happened. I rang the vet straight away but all she said was "if hes still not responding after 15 mins then bring him down". I dont think she knew what was going on! He has done this twice (as far as i am aware). Surely this is not normal behaviour? Does anyone know whats up with him?

- Hes 1 1/2 years old

- He is eating and drinking as normal

- He shares a cage with two rats and shows no aggression towards them or me.

- He has a respiratory disease but this is kept under control.

Is there anyone with rat experience that can help me out? I would really appreciate your help. Thanx

  1. When working for a pet shop, I came across this problem with a lot of customers rats.  Seems a common thing with  these rodents, I belive they did not need any medication or treatment. I still think you need to ask your  vet to check him over.

  2. It is possible for rats to have seizures.  The vet did know what she was talking about - there was just nothing she could have done after the seizure had ended.  If he has a few then take himn for a check-up.  They may be able to put him on medication but it will be expensive, difficult to administer without giving it to the other rats and it will have side effects.

  3. im no expert but i have heard that rats can have seizures so that is probably what happen.
