  1. Lead is micro particles of {LEAD}    [ Real lead like battery cable ends]

The higher combustion engines of the past used leaded gas.

The lead, spread through out the gas changed the burn pattern in the combustion chamber also the lead gave a uniformed burn in the application also. But these small particles both burned and unburned were expelled as exaust pollution. The law is now, against lead additives.

                                      "BRILLIANT"!!!!

  2. OK, without being too technical (!) lead used to be added to motor fuel so that, amongst other things, the exhaust valves and valve seats would be lubricated. This meant that car engines could be made with cheaper materials, thus making a saving on each one.

If you have an older car which would only run on leaded, this means a strip-down job of the cylinder head to replace the exhaust valve seats with hardened material, and possibly the valves themselves.

Another reason for removing lead from fuel is that lead is poisonous, and it was felt that exhaust fumes from cars could be affecting the health of children in many countries around the World.

Most cars made since the early 1970's are designed to run on unleaded.
