  1. You got a really good answer from Peter, and recent 1st-hand info of course is a lot better than some of the "I was there 10 years ago and..." or the "I heard..." answers

Yes the tobacco ban (in place for years) was rolled out to include the catering industry and that includes coffeeshops.  So to smoke tobacco you either have to smoke it in a specially created area (e.g. glass walls) away from staff, smoke outside (somewhere quiet if it includes cannabis) or smoke it pure inside.  It is not allowed (aloud?) to smoke tobacco even in a coffeeshop

Smoking outside - well it's true that some do it but best to do this somewhere quiet rather than in the middle of a busy street

Yes we have national (bank) holidays but we are on the long stretch without one at the moment until Christmas.  Normally banks, offices, shops etc are closed on these days, but in the city centre of Amsterdam (same as London) you will only see the impact in smaller shops and banks.  The normal tourist attractions, plus all the cafe's/restaurants, larger shopd, supermarkets etc will be open (although some on reduced hours).

    Anyway, enjoy your holiday

  2. i just recently got back from the damage you can smoke in cafes in side or out in there little patios you can put tobacco with you cronic and you can even smoke in some pubs that dont sell it but are happy to let you smoke up if you buy a drink you can find a quiet spot in a park and smoke i wouldnt just walk a crowed street and smoke it only 4 per cent of dutch smoke they tolerate it but they dont like seeing tourists abuse there kind hospitality

  3. You cannot smoke ordinary cigarettes in any indoor workplace.

You can ONLY smoke pure cannabis in designated coffeeshops or in someone's private house.

Yes, Amsterdam does have what they call long weekends, they don't refer to them as Bank Holidays. It's not always the same as in the UK. However, seeing as it's a major tourist draw in the middle of the tourist season, I doubt very much that everything will be closed.
