  1. 1. When everyone's afraid of an enemy like communism or witchcraft, things go crazy and they turn their back on morals and accuse innocent people of committing crimes without evidence. The idea is to protect their society from bad things but ultimately the society just turns in on itself and loses its values.

    2. It's conflicting because he had an affair with Abigail, so he doesn't seem to have strong morals at the beginning of the play.

    3. Paranoia was a big part of it because people accused other innocent people of being witches to protect themselves, and nobody trusts anyone once things get going. Personally I think one character can be blamed for all of it but it's your choice.

    4. This is really up to you - it's about the mass hysteria and how the girls gave into pressure and did what Abigail said to protect being accused themselves. Is it wrong that they didn't stand up to her in order to protect their own lives?

    5. He's not willing to lie just to save his life.

    6. This is also up to you - the church went crazy over something without hard evidence and ended up killing people because of it in an attempt to protect everyone else. So it suggests that the church maybe isn't as perfect and holy as it seems.

    7. Personally I think it's fear because the characters accuse innocent people of being witches just because they're afraid of dying over something they didn't even do--they're basically killing others just to save themselves. But you could probably make an argument for both.
