I would omit the comma myself, but keeping it certainly isn't a mortal sin, grammar-wise.

It's worth checking out, or sending to someone who needs a gentle reminder about writing well.  The article includes excellent writing tips like:

*Always avoid alliteration.

*Prepositions are not words to end sentences with.

*Avoid cliches like the plague—they're old hat.

No you shouldn't put a comma there. A good way to tell if you should is to see if the separated parts of the sentence could be its own sentence. your second half would not work.

The sentence is good as is.  Keep the comma in there.
