Question:

Please convince me I could live in London?

Serious work and personal reasons will make me move to London in a month. I don't like London and England in general, mostly it depresses me with the awful food, terrible weather, nasty people and everything being so overpriced. Yet I must go for a year or more and can't do anything about it. So please tell me what you think is nice about the place, something good to look forward to and get me motivated

  1. there is nothing good to say about the place, you are right. its a real shithole...a dump and you are going to have a really shiit time there.

  2. I totally agree with you on London and England.

But if you have to move there, just tell yourself it is only for the short term, not the rest of your life.

Some positives- you will meet loads of people from different places, you can get anywhere in Europe quickly and fairly cheaply (good for weekends away), you will have work experience to put on your resume, there is a lot of entertainment and always something to do.

  3. Wow, I am jealous of you!  I wanted to live in London for so long - it is a fabulous city with so much to offer. The British are great, London has a million things to do, there is a ton of history, it is close to mainland europe for short trips, you will gets tons of vacation time, their food is underrated, and you will be earning the strongest currency in the world.  The best thing you can do is try to change your attitude toward the situation and think about the jealous people like me who would love to be in your situation! Have fun...

  4. dont

i did that terrible mistake, and got stuck here

if it is inevitable, just book ur plane tiket as return after ione yr so ull look forward to something

but london isnt so bad when u know ur just staying temporarily, i mean gain experience in another atmosphere.

good economical experience, and try to make people there smile more on the streets :)

theyre not terrible people, they just keep themselves to themselves, i donno, i think it is part of culture , but they dont mean it

anyhow, good luck for a whole yr

cant wait 4 vacation, in 3 days :)

  5. i have a home there and london is a great place ppl r friendly n ur close to paris

  6. Surely even if you do think the prices are high you will be getting commensurate wages. London is expensive, but well worth the expense as far as i am concerned. It is one of the most tolerant cities ever, and doesn't advertise itself as such, because it is taken for granted. All the best shows/concerts are there.

You can go to lots of free concerts in the parks. Hyde park and green park are both lovely especially in the summer. i don't know where you get the idea from that people are unfriendly, in my experience it is very easy to get chatting to anyone, and the British sense of humour is almost impossible to better. Go with a more open mind and I am sure you wont want to leave at the end of your year.

  7. London is pretty diverse in landscape, people, atmosphere and more, so I'm sure you can find an area within it or surrounding it that you'll enjoy. For instance, Richmond is a really lovely area with plenty of greenery, views, markets and theatres etc whilst Canary Wharf is very industrial and a centre for shopping, business etc. So on the bright side, it's not as though you'd be moving to somewhere that's very limited in what it has to offer, whereas in the city you have more of a choice in lifestyle.

Try to remember that in London, you'll have more of a chance to meet plenty of new people (who I'm sure aren't all "nasty") as well as easy access to shopping, food, travel, entertainment etc. It's also a key area for job opportunities, so if you find that you aren't enjoying the work, it's not too difficult to change paths.

You wont ever know if you'll enjoy it or not until you've experienced it. Try to think about the positive aspects of moving there and I'm sure you'll enjoy it a lot better. I'd advise you now to think about where in London you'd like to live, because that you can choose, and it will have great effect on how well you settle in. Good luck :)

  8. You have more chance of getting stabbed by idiots in london

  9. I feel the same about you about the UK.I lived in London afew years but in London most things are on your doorstep, you don't usually need to go far,it's rich in culture, there's more career opportunities..

On 10K I honestly can't see how you're gonna survive, you need at least double that if you need to rent! You'd need 2 jobs. It's no fun if you're constantly working and still worried about paying the rent and eating.I've done it on a low wage and it's hard!

  10. I live in London and think it is great, however a 10K job? If that is in sterling it is simply not enough to live in and enjoy London, if you are working full time it doesn't even sound like you are getting minimum wage so you may want to check that out.

Anyway on to the positives to London...

There is so much to do, culture wise, there are plenty of art galleries, museums and theatres (with most the art galleries and museums being free).  Also London has a great night life, whether you want to go to a club, bar or restaurant.  Most importantly London has great people (despite what people may say about crime and stabbing etc  - to be honest that is to be expected in any big city).

Finally it is ridiculous to say that the UK has awful food, that is an old stereotype, London has amazing restaurants and is so multicultural that you can find any type of food to eat anywhere and if you can't afford that go to the supermarket and make some of your own home dishes.

  11. London has a great vibe! I couldn't imagine living elsewhere, London is varied and vibrant with great sites, great restaurants, bars etc ...

  12. Ah try and be positive!! It's vibrant, it's rocking, there's something to do 24-hours a day, always something interesting going on here. You will do and find something different every single weekend of the time you are here, whether its a visit to one of the museums, or some incredible and individual little bar, or a secret garden in a secret old square that you just stumbled on.... I could go on and on. It's a myth that London is overpriced, you only need spend as much as you want to if you look for the right places (try joining a facebook group called 'Cheap London joy' or looking at Time Out's 'free events' listings. Also the buses are cheap as chips - 90p to anywhere). It's also a myth that people are unfriendly - sure no one's going to be chatting away on the tube at rush hour but everyone here has interesting stories and reasons for being here and you will come across such a gigantic mix of people most of whom are as happy to engage with you as anyone anywhere else.

It's little known that London is one of the greenest capital cities in the world and you can always spend a day just basking in one of the hundreds of parks or roaming across the vast and beautiful expanse of Hampstead Heath. If I need to get away from it all I go down by the river - it's crazy that no matter what goes on in this town there's always some peace to be had there.

Mate, this is only a phase in your life! You don't have to stay here forever. Maybe you'll like it more than you think, maybe you'll look back fondly on it in years to come - try and make the best of it while you can and at least see it as a big adventure.

    Good luck! Hx
