Candy is a child with cerebral palsy who was placed in Louise Defelice English class. Defelice English class. Defelice worried about number of things: she had no experience with handicapped youth, she was apprehensive about candy's ability to speak and she wasn’t sure how her classmates would react to her. Candy, on the other hand was neither worried nor self conscious. She wasn’t seeking sympathy or any kind of special treatment.

Ms.Defelice soon became concerned about whether Candy could handle an upcoming oral report and asked her if she would rather substitute another as signment.candy insisted that she could do it. On the day of the reports, when candy's turn came, Defelice was apprehensive as the girl lumbered to the front of the classroom. Just as the teacher was about to say something Vince, a class learned, turned to his peers and told them to shut up and pay attention .

Sounds like a "buddy system" may work well.  The teacher can set up a schedule and have the group work in twos, changing partners with each new assignment.  This would do two very big things:  the teacher could observe how the children work together, without pretense, with Candy and may make her more at ease; it would teach the teacher and students a very valuable lesson in learning along side someone with a disability - someone different, bright, and just limited, but not by their intelligence....
