  1. Importance of being sensitive:

-Emotional needs- you do not want to upset child or damage their self-esteem! This could also damage the trust and relationship between u and child.

-you're own protection-you do not want to be up on a child abuse case eg: neglect or emotional abuse if a parent hears/thinks you have upset the child or not been caring for them in an appropriate way!

-By boosting self-esteem and providing appropriate care child is more likely to learn and develop in their communication.

-IF other chidlren see you being unsensitive then they may copy and this leads to bullying and exclusion of child.

    How to adapt...

-Leanr makaton-a simple version of signing and use it in the setting-not just with the one child...this way all children learn a method of communicating without words...child with difficulty can express him/herself so avoids emotional upset and also means if child can see your actions they may better understand what you telling them!

-GEt down to child's level, give eye contact and friendly approach.

-Give them time...sometimes may take a while for a full reply.

-Have a suitable environment-carpets are better than wooden flooring as less echo, open layout of room to avoid muffling, quiet play areas away from noiser such as mesys play and imaginative areas.

-Talk to parents to find out methods they use at home-parents are the biggest expert on their child (usually).
