There were enormous changes in farming between 1750 and 1900. Were people better off as a result of these changes?

In the Mark scheme it says the conclusion must show

an understanding of the complexity of changes reflected

Demonstrates links between the changes and their effects, and explicitly discusses "BETTER OFF"

AND:

discusses changes in relation to progress.

The changes are Enclosure, Four field Crop rotation,Changes in animals(selective breeding) and mechanisation.

Any one willing to write me the conclusion!? if not please give suggestions and help me!!

  1. Your conclusion should be pretty much like your start.

As i don't know your start I can't help you.

Sounds like GCSE coursework which you can always rewrite with changes in after you teacher has first marked it so don't get too worried.

    good luck.

  2. Is this a conclusion to an essay you wrote??  If so, a conclusion to an essay is your introduction paragragh and thesis restated.

  3. The Importance of the Agricultural Revolution to the Industrial Revolution

    Crop yield increased

Enough food was available for people in the cities

Falling food prices meant more money to spend on consumer goods

Healthier population which meant decline in death rate, especially in infants

In the 18th century, the population doubled from 5 million to 10 million

Wool yield increased due to better care of animals and selective breeding

More wool was available for the textile industry and at less cost

    Ready workforce available

Peasants were turned off their land by enclosures

    Families moved into the cities

There was much unemployment and many people were looking for work

    Labour was cheap

    The Seed Drill

Up until this period, farmers planted the seeds for cereal crops by carrying the seeds in a bag and walking up and down the field throwing or broadcasting the seed. They broadcast the seed by hand on to the ploughed and harrowed ground. The problem with this method was that it did not give a very even distribution. It was not, therefore, an efficient use of the seed and much of it was wasted.

Jethro Tull invented a Seed Drill which could be pulled behind a horse. It consisted of a wheeled vehicle containing a box filled with grain. There was a wheel-driven ratchet that sprayed the seed out evenly as the Seed Drill was pulled across the field.

Improvements in Farming in the 18th century

Between 1693 and 1700, the harvests were poor due to the exceptionally wet weather. Wheat prices were higher than 48 shillings per quarter. However, from 1700 until 1765, the harvests were much improved and the price of a quarter of wheat averaged around 40 shillings. In fact, between 1730 and 1740, wheat prices fell to an all time low. People found themselves better off and had more money to spend on consumer goods. Prices did start to become higher than 48 shillings once again, around 1770, when the population increase turned England into an importer of wheat rather than an exporter.

The years 1700 to 1770, however, had seen some interesting changes in livestock farming caused by the improved harvests and the introduction of the four year rotation method. Previously, most cattle and sheep were slaughtered before winter set in, since there was no food to feed them and they provided meat during the coldest months. Harvesting turnips meant that livestock could now be fed during the winter. This increased the number of animals and this, in turn, provided a good supply of manure which could be fed back into the soil to improve its nutrient content.

Some livestock experts, such as Robert Bakewell and Thomas Coke, introduced selective breeding programmes to improve the quality of the animals. Bakewell crossed different breeds of sheep to select their best characteristics. At the time, this was known as "breeding in and in". His experiments in selective breeding of sheep produced the Dishley, or New Leicester breed in 1755.

    The Four Field System

Viscount Townshend successfully introduced a new method of crop rotation on his farms. He divided his fields up into four different types of produce with wheat in the first field, clover (or ryegrass) in the second, oats or barley in the third and, in the fourth, turnips or swedes. The turnips were used as fodder to feed livestock in winter. Clover and ryegrass were grazed by livestock. Using this system, he found that he could grow more crops and get a better yield from the land.

If a crop was not rotated, then the nutrient level in the field would go down with time. The yield of the crop from the field decreased. Using the four field system, the land could not only be "rested", but also could be improved by growing other crops. Clover and turnips grown in a field after wheat, barley or oats, naturally replaced nutrients into the soil. None of the fields had to be taken out of use whilst they recovered. Also, where animals grazed on the clover and turnip fields, eating the crop, their droppings helped to manure the soil.

The four field system was successful because it improved the amount of food produced.

  6. THOSE WERE THE DAYS WHEN GOD USED TO TALK FACE TO FACE WITH THE PEOPLE THAT WERE IN THE EARTH. IT WAS JUST AFTER CREATION. SINCE WPEOPLE WER OBEDIENT BY THEN, GOD COULD DIRECT THEM ON WAHT TO D OAND THE YCOIULD OBEY AND DO AS DIRECTED BY GOD WITHOUT QUESTIONING. GOD COULD ALSO APPOINT LEADERS DIREDCTLY LIKE HE DID TO DAVID.

WHEN ADAM AND EVE SINNED, THEY WERE KICKED OUT OF THE ADENS. THAT IS WHEN THE WORLD BECAME SOMETHING DIFFER ENT FROM WHAT GOD HAD INTENDED IT TO BE. THE BEGINING OF PROBLEMS AND THE END OF THE GOOD OLDEN DAYS. WE ONLY ENJOY THE GOOD OLDEN DAYS WHEN WWE ARE YOUNG.

THE ISSUE  IS THAT THERE WAS GODLY GUIDANCE AND ENVIRONMENT FAVOURABLE TO MAKE AGRICULTURE GOOD. THE FARMERS BY THEN USED TO LOVE ONE ANOTHER AND TO OFFER SACRIFICE TO THE GOD OF RAIN AND AGRICULTURE WHILE THE GOD OF FERTILITY USED TO MAKE HUMAN BEINGS REPRODUCE. THIS MAKES IT DIFFERENT FROM WHAT WE HAVE TODAY.
