  1. there is one on Mount Washington.  Chase that one and see what info pops up.

There's lots of information about them on the Internet - the proper terminology is 'rack railway' or 'rack and pinion railway' - they have them most famously in Switzerland and Austria, but the UK also has a well known example, the Snowdon Mountain Railway, and as the previous answerer said, in the USA there's Mount Washington.

    The basic rack railway uses double rack rails, fastened to steel sleepers between the running rails. Each locomotive is equipped with toothed pinions (cogwheels), which engage the rack and provide all the traction necessary to scale the steepest inclines. On the way down, the rack and pinion system also acts as a brake.
