  1. Your question is kind of off the wall.  If I am understanding it you want to know how to determin what a hole is worth?  You have par three's, par four's, par five's and in some instances a par six....  Which  means they allot you so many strokes to get par.  One over par is a bogey, two over a double bogey etc...  One under par is a birdie, two under par is an eagle, three under par a double eagle.  And if it goes in the hole on one stroke from the tee its a hole in one...  That is very rare...  Like a three hundred game in bowling or a no hitter in baseball..  I hope I have helped you a bit...  If not change the question...  Grant M in Pennsylvania

  2. The golf course may seem a fa-off-in-the-future place, where you will not set foot for a long time. But it is helpful to understand the layout of the course to understand what you must learn. When I teach I like to put the pieces of the puzzle together as promptly as possible. Understanding the golf course allows you a look at the big picture, so you can figure out where to put the pieces.

    A regulation golf course consists of 18 holes. There are generally three lengths of holes: par 3s, par 4s, and par 5s. The length or yardage of the hole, which will be listed on your scorecard, determines the par. The length or yardage of the hole, which will be listed on your scorecard, determines the par. For our purposes, a par 3 is a short hole, a par 4 is a medium-length hole, and a par 5 is a longer-length hole, which can often look like an eternity to a new golfer.

  3. With golf, it is the lowest score (number of strokes) that wins the game.  For every hole, there is a standard number of strokes to get the ball from the tee box into the hole on the green.  This is called 'Par'.  The shorter the hole, the less strokes.  For example, a short hole of 180 yards will be a par 3, 400 yards is a par 4...etc.  A round of golf is 18 holes.  The 'Par' for the round is the sum of all the Pars for each hole.  Depending on the total length of the entire 18 holes, the Par for the round is usually Par 69 to 73 with Par 70 to 72 being the most common.

    So, if I finished 18 holes with 5 over Par on a par 72 course, my score would be 77, and if your score is 75 (3 over par), you win.

    There are also penalties for situations such as lost ball, ball hit in to water, rules violations...etc that ADD strokes (1 or 2 strokes depending on the penalty) to your total, causing you to have a HIGHER score.

    Some terminology relating to strokes against Par on a hole:

    Double Eagle/Albatross = 3 under Par for the hole

    Eagle = 2 under Par

    Birdie = 1 under Par

    Par = well... thats Par

    Bogey = 1 over Par

    Double Bogey = 2 over Par

    Triple Bogey = 3 over Par... and so on for Bogeys

  4. Each shot you take from the tee to the whole (including air swings and pentalies if you go into a hazard) is counted and you write it on a score card after each hole. At the end of 18 holes, add up all the numbers you have written down and this will give you your total score for the day. Have fun and enjoy.

    Have a good one...

  5. Par being the expected number of shots to complete the hole for a scratch player. Ex. 2 to get on green and 2 putts. for a par 4.

    Birdie being one under par. One less stroke. Ex. Green in 2 on par 4 and 1 putt.

    Eagle being 2 under par. Ex. hole your second shot on par 4.

    Bogie is one over par.

    Double bogie is 2 over par and so on.
