  1. 1) Get a large container - A small aquarium will be best as it allows the class to see the caterpillars foraging, rather than being cooped up in a small bottle. Regardless of the container - use some screen mesh to cover it.

    2) Lay down some substrate. A small layer of soil and leaves are best.

At this point you have two options:

    1) Get an egg clutch of caterpillars. The best time for this is spring.

    2) Catch caterpillars. Again, the best time is spring.

Once you have the eggs or caterpillars, use a Dichotomous key or just plain ol' google to identify them. Do a little research - find out which plants they prefer. Failing all else, collect branches of the plant you found them on. Put these in the container with the caterpillar.

Now all you have to do is occasionally change the food, and mist the plants once a day. After a few months of eating, they caterpillars will weave themselves cocoons. A bit after that and they will become beautiful butterflies. At this point, you should release them together with the class and watch as they fly away.
