Jazz is a very American form of art music.  Art music means it is a viewed as an art form, much like classical music.  Whereas in classical music, the composition is the most important, in jazz, improvisation is the focal point of jazz.  Musicians will have the "head" to play, or main melody, usually followed by solos from one or more musicians.  The instrumentation of jazz music is very diverse, but traditionally, you have a drummer with a set that is usually smaller than a rock drum set, a bassist, rhythm player such as a piano or guitar player, and a horn section.  In the beginning, jazz was strictly an African American thing, then in the 1930s the white community in America helped change this into a big band type thing, where improv was difficult.  Eventually, in the 50's and 60's jazz became small combo based and improv was again the focal point.
