1. The importance of intellectual freedom.

Why is the ability to break away from generally accepted beliefs important? It allows progress as a society and the development of a society's tools and resources. before the Renaissance (and even during it), people were punished as heretics for speaking of ideas that went against the church. However, with more intellectual freedom, our technology and understanding of the world has grown by leaps and bounds in the last 150 yrs.

2. The allure of the past

What is interesting about the past? Why is it important to know about it?

3. The mindlessness of mass culture

Only in a mindless group could someone such as Paris Hilton be deemed important. Groups of people are stupid. Teenagers go from boy band to boy band while pursuing the stupidest of trends. People that act intelligently by themselves follow the crowd when submersed in group culture. Why?



4. The evils of censorship

What can happen when a culture becomes censored and is only allowed to see things from one point of view? What can happen to a culture that is only allowed to see things as a ruler or government wants the people to see? How does censorship limit cultural development or change?

5. Knowlede vs. Ignorance

Why is knowledge important? What are the drawback of obtaining knowledge? Why is the reduction of ignorance important? Why would people want to keep themselves or others ignorant?
