A player is in an off-side position if he is nearer to his opponents' goal-line than the ball, unless:

he is in his own half of the field of play, or

he is not nearer to his opponents' goal-line than at least two of his opponents.

A player shall only be declared off-side and penalized for being in an off-side position, if, at the moment the ball touches, or is played by, one of his team, he is, in the opinion of the referee

interfering with play or with an opponent, or

seeking to gain an advantage by being in that position.

A player shall not be declared off-side by the referee

merely because of his being in an off-side position, or

if he receives the ball direct from a goal-kick, a corner-kick or a throw-in.

If a player is declared off-side, the referee shall award an IFK, which shall be taken by a player of the opposing team from the place where the infringement occurred, unless the offense is committed by a player in his opponents' goal area, in which case the free-kick shall be taken from any point within the goal-area.

normally the strikers for team B will be in the same line as the defenders of team A but when someone from team B will kick the ball forward, the strikers Team B have to be inline with atleast 1 defender when the ball is kicked!

if he is ahead of the defenders when the ball is kicked to him then he is offside!

The female shopper in front of you has seen them also and is eyeing them with desire. Both of you have forgotten your purses.

It would be rude to push in front of the first woman if you had no money to pay for the shoes.

The shop assistant remains at the till waiting.

Your friend is trying on another pair of shoes at the back of the shop and sees your dilemma. She prepares to throw her purse to you.

If she does so, you can catch the purse, then walk round the other shopper and buy the shoes!

At a pinch she could throw the purse ahead of the other shopper and "whilst it is in flight" you could nip around the other shopper, catch the purse and buy the shoes!

BUT, you must always remember that until the purse has "actually been thrown", it would be plain wrong for you to be in front of the other shopper and you would be OFFSIDE!

Not sure about Australian Football but UK Football is as below if this helps?

When receiving the ball in the opposion half their must be an opposition player between you and their goal at the time that the ball is played.

Main rules to remember are:-

1) You can not be offside in your own half

2) You can be in an offside position when you receive the ball as long as when the ball initially left your team mate (from their pass) you were onside

3) You can not be offside from a throw in

4) You can not be offside if the ball is played backwards

5) You can stand in an offside position as long as you are not activly involved in play.
