Please explain this to me.!?

The Fifth Commandment:

"You shall not kill"

What does that mean in your own words.?

I have to write a paper and get different answers from different people that is why I keep asking these questions, and thank you to people who answer.!

The true translation into English of that Commandment is "Thou shalt not murder", not "Thou shalt not kill". Unfortunately, no major English bible use that translation, so not many people know about it.

To me, it means that you should not kill someone for the sake of killing them, be it that you want revenge, or you hate them, or you just need to kill something. Such things are not acceptable under that commandment.

What would be ok would be to kill someone in self defense, or if it was an accident that you caused, or something of the sort.

I think it means you shall not commit murder, that is kill without a good reason.  Defending or protecting yourself or your loved ones is not murder.

Even further, it could be taken to mean, avoid those actions that directly or even indirectly lead to the murder or destruction of others.  For example, if I sell illegal drugs, cigarettes, alcohol, .....

I think it means that no person should take the life of any living thing. Including animals, and even plants. This sounds crazy at first, but not even eating plants would only be expected to achieve enlightenment. Mainly I think it just means not to take the life of any living thing you can afford not to.

To kill someone is to end their life.  So, "You shall not end someone else's life".

Not only shall you not kill. Jesus says "whomever hates his brother is guilty of murder" so not only does it tell you not to literally kill someone, but also not to hate someone. Hope I helped!

"Thou shall not kill", should have been translated to the English,  "Thou shall not murder".  The commandment means do not take a life unjustified.

The Old Testament has at least 9 different Hebrew words that all convey the idea of taking a life --of killing. While all the words do carry some sort of common meaning, they also tend to each have specific emphases on the type of death: kill, beat [to death], destroy, butcher, wound [fatally], strike, sacrifice, execute, or murder.

The Hebrew word ratsách means to "murder" or "slay". While it also shares the concept of death with these other eight words, this term focuses more on the illicit taking of a life (i.e.: murder).

The New Testament quotes Exodus 20:13 in Matthew 19:18, Mark 10:19, and Luke 18:20. In these verses, the Greek word used is phoneú. Like ratsách, this word also means to "murder" or "slay". It is used for the translating of the Hebrew ratsách because they both convey the thought of taking someone's life without cause.

ratsách and phoneú both mean to [kill by] murder (but they don't mean "beat", "destroy", "butcher", "fatally wound", "strike", "sacrifice", or "execute").

With Hebrew having such a wide range of choices of possible words, it is important to note which word was actually selected for a specific text. It is also very helpful to note which of the words were not selected.

Well... I guess as simple as this command is, a lot of people confuse it.

Don't kill others, no abortion, no suicide. We are not our own, because Christ purchased us. We don't have the right to take life.

I'm not a Christian; but my view of "Thou shalt not kill" means no killing anyone - no shooting someone in a war, no sticking someone in an electric chair or giving them a lethal injection, no taking to your significant other with a shotgun...do not kill.

I don't think it includes killing animals for sustenance; although I would probably include killing animals for sport (ie bears, etc.) in the same category as "thou shalt not kill".

According to Robert Oden, a Biblical Scholar, the correct translation is "Thou shalt do no blood revenge."  In the historical context of the time it was written, blood revenge was what the next of kin did when they went out and intentionally killed somebody who had killed - even accidently - a kin of theirs...most of the Mediterranean religions had some form of restriction about blood revenge...it essentially could cause a lot of internal civil strife in a community that was trying to grow...

The Bible was written by real people dealing with real problems of their time...

for nonce means lie in wait murder in our language it is 1st degree premeditated murder or to murder in "cold blood"

so properly translated it means you shall not commit premeditated murder in the cold blood
