Please explain to me if you can. When I hear people say,"life is tough" ,compared to what?

Jello.  Most things are in fact tougher than jello.  Unless it's not cooked and just in cubes, the way it comes in Britain.  In which case it's quite chewy.

Or possibly compared to thinking up a better platitude.  Or at least that seems too tough for some folks.

Don't know but would say it has become progressively easier throughout time, the war years were tough for instance.

I think that's usually a comparison with the other side of the fence where the grass is always greener and you're never tired because you haven't had back to back appointments all flippin day.
