We are hiring Business IT graduates for a new branch in our computer maintenance company, an enhancement of services.

We do have a qualified IT director hired, but are trying to line up applicants so her job will be easier once she settles in in the next 2-3 weeks.

We have this fellow who claims to be a graduate of a fairly prestigious University, but claims he is an IT who specializes in graphics.

When asked what his duties as a Business IT would entail, he answered that he is basically a computer technician with an IT degree in graphics.

Furthermore, he states that he repairs, builds and trouble shoots computers and troubleshoots programs.

Also, instead of filling in his expected first year salary requirement, he wrote that it depended on us.

I don't understand the logic of what he has written and wonder if it is even remotely likely that we should put him in the line up for one of the jobs.

Back to my original question, does he sound genuine, or is he trying to con us?

  1. Doesn't sound like a con, but he does sound inexperienced. Most IT graduates, I would hope, focused more on technical aspects of Information Technology, which is what I.T. is all about. Graphics is more of an art discipline. While it does have its place in IT with web design and so forth, I would look for someone who is certified in Unix or has an MCSE (Microsoft Certified System Engineer). If you're looking for someone to maintain a small office network, this guy might be fine. If you need someone who can juggle 50+ Unix servers handling 500,000 customers' data... yeah maybe go with someone a little more "seasoned" ;-)

This guy, as you explained him, sounds like a technician/help desk type of candidate. As far as the salary goes, he may be unsure of what someone with his skillset should make, and doesn't want to undershoot his salary and make less money when you would have paid more, or overshoot it risking losing the job to another candidate.

  2. He sounds full of it , and he definitely does not understand what business IT is about (databases more than graphics). And you can always call his university admissions office to check his degree claims.
