  1. Fact of life, you can't avoid sliding/skidding 100% of the time if you ride on two wheels.

    Avoidance techniques.

Always be aware of everything around you, especially other road users.

Think -well- ahead.  Monitor corners, all junctions, driveways etc.

Be aware of road conditions, wet, leaves, icy etc.

    Recovery.

The technique for recovering from a slide is, like a car, steer into the slide.

If your legs are long enough, and your bike is not too heavy, put a foot down on the low side as stability during the slide (do NOT do this unless you are wearing tough footware)

    Falling off

Wherever possible try to avoid landing -flat-, roll if possible.

Wear, at ALL times, adequate safety gear.  Safety gear available today WILL save your life and your skin.

If you've ever fallen off and suffered from road rash (and worse) you will NEVER ride a bike again without protection.

    Cars.

If a car pulls out on you from the side of the road and you can't avoid hitting it, the safest thing to do is to drop the bike and let the bike hit the car first, you hit the bike seat (I've had to do this twice and it's saved my life).

Again, NEVER ride a bike again without full body protection. You never know when you are going to need it!

  2. Experience can help you learn the signs of slick surprises, but there are things you can do to help. For one thing, avoid polarized glasses, which can hide the shine of something slippery.
