  1. World wide, deforestation was not nearly the problem until modern equipment came on the scene. There has been some deforestation all along, but in general it was more in keeping up with population; that hard fought battle to clear land made it much more valuable and so it was cared for to a greater degree. It all becomes much more of a problem as we now see the map clearly, the end of the "impenetrable jungle realm" is at hand and with that the biodiversity of species and the protection of many (at a great cost). Until the last decades these catch phrases were not in existence as money and research had not found their way to the issues at hand. In the 18th and 19th century "A man struck out to build his empire, and woe be to any that stood in the way of his God given right to do so!" Many a fortune was made and huge farms were carved out of Africa, North, South and Central America, Europe, Asia... the plantation years.

Now, you are a criminal to do the same as the end of it is near, protection now afforded the primitive land, but a bit short both in time and in the quality of our legislation. It was the engine and our capacity to promote a product world wide that brought us here.

Do not forget, though, that while looking at deforestation, ask yourself why you look at it, then ask yourself, "Is it the trees, or the land?" Does the US Great Plains actually fall into all of this, and does the African Savanna, and Australia's prime farm lands fall into this? Were the great expanses of grass land as important and bio-diverse as a jungle? Isn't the history there part of the story of the conquest for land?

  2. Ask the South American farmers about 21st century deforestation.
