  1. Napoleon was born August 15, 1769 in Ajaccio Corsica. His parents were Letizia Ramolino and Carlo Buonaparte, his father was a lawyer and spent alot of time in Paris so Napoleon was raised primarily by his mother. His parents managed through some connections to send Napoleon to a mediocre military college in Brienne. After spending a couple of years there Napoleon was selected to continue his education at the ecole militaire.

Upon his graduation Napoleon was a second lieutenant of artillery. Over the next few years he went back and force between France and Corsica. While in Corsica he at first supported Pasquale Paoli and later came into conflict with him and had to flee with his family back to France. Through a friend he was appointed the commander of artillery that was besieging Toulon. Because of Napoleon the battle was won and he made some important contacts.

The next major event for in Napoleon's career was the 13 Vendemiaire (whiff of grapeshot) that earned him a promotion to commander of the army of Italy. From 1796-1797 Napoleon fought a number of brilliant campaigns against the Austrians in northern Italy.

In 1798 Napoleon proposed that the Directoire send an army to Egypt to interfere with British trade. Napoleon was made commander in chief of the army and managed to occupy Malta and Egypt and launch an invasion of the holy land. However by 1799 things were beginning to look bad in Egypt and he returned to France. After his return to Paris he seized power in a coup and became first consul.

After defeating the second coalition Napoleon turned his attention to Frances economy and legal system.

In 1804 he crowned himself emperor. From 1805-1807 Napoleon campaigned against Austria, Prussia and Russia. His army was during this time was the best trained that he would command.

In 1806 Napoleon enacted the Berlin decree (continental system) which put a continental wide embargo on British goods. This lead to the French invasion of the Iberian Pensinsula and six years of hard fighting that drained the French empire of money and soldiers.

In 1809 the Austrians broke their treaty with France and declared war. Napoleon left Spain raised new forces and smashed the Austrians at Wagram. By 1812 relations between France and Russia turned to war and Napoleon lead the multi-national Grand Armee into Russia. Due to logistical problems and the Russian strategy of scorthed earth the Grande Armee was almost completely destroyed. The army started at around 600,000 and by the time it left Russia it was less than 100,000 the central column numbering less than 30,000.

In 1813 a new army was raised by Napoleon and fought desperately in Germany but was beaten in the battle of Leipzig. By 1814 Napoleon had 70,000 soldiers under his command and fought a good defensive campaign in France but was up against over 1 million allied soldiers. He was exiled to Elba but staged a comeback called the hundred days and tried to make peace with the allies but had his letter returned unopened. Seeing no other choice Napoleon took his army and invaded Belgium in an effort to defeat the British and Prussians. On June 16 he beat the Prussians and on June 18 fought the British and Prussians at Waterloo and was defeated. Napoleon was then exiled to Saint Helena where his health graduly deteriorated possibly by Arsenic poisoning or stomach cancer.

  2. Isn't that a little much? This isn't even the homework assistance area!

How about starting with his childhood in Corsica and his family loyalties which were to play a large part in his career, and some say his downfall, later - eg he made one brother King of Italy if I remember rightly.

There were numerous battles, culminating in his march on Russia. But even tho he won so many and ruled most of the European continent, the treaties which he made with the conquered were subsequently breached. So his armies were constantly fighting. Then he was stopped at Russia and effectively defeated. You could then look at his demoralised retreat from Moscow and the gathering of the Allies and Wellington's simultaneous victories in Spain and march into France. Then you would need to look at his first defeat and treaty and exile. Then his return to France and gathering of his old soldiers and glory leading to tactical errors and his defeat at Waterloo.

Hope that helps, but I won't do it for you. Sorry. Good luck
