  1. The balanced equation for oxygen is

    2Mg  + O2  -->  2MgO

    There also is some reaction of magnesium with nitrogen in the air.

    3Mg +  N2  -->  Mg3N2

    The exact percentage of reaction with oxygen and with nitrogen is complex depending upon size,  shape and temperature of the magnesium and the quantity of air present.   With an excess of air,  most of the reaction will be with oxygen but not all.
