In the remote areas of the north, it is a necessary way of life.

The larger issue with whaling is controlling it.

There is no reason to ban controlled hunting on species with healthy populations. Controlling species and limits would allow for hunting of a particular species that is in balance with the populations ability to maintain its numbers.

There should definitely be regulations (and real consequences for violating those regulations) as to the number and the species. Obviously, endangered populations should not be hunted.

I don't think the fact that whales are beautiful creatures is a valid argument against whaling ... there are many creatures that are killed and eaten around the world that are beautiful.

Responsible laws and adherence to those laws can save the whales without completely restricting the industry. The real people at the heart of this issue who need to have their feet held to the flames are those who are not effectively enforcing bans and regulations. And legislators not setting realistic expectations and restrictions.

im not saying im for or against whaling im quite im partial on it, and the point im about to make is not an argument for either view but with seas being over fished, without the control of whale numbers would an increase in whales not put pressure on other species..?

ABSOLUTELY  NO  WHALING  SHOULD  BE  ALLOWED  BY  ANY ONE  OR  ANY  ORGANIZATION.  There is NO reason whatsoever, in this day and age, to kill whales.  They are wonderful animals, very necessary to the environment and part of the ecology of this planet.  Killing them should be a capital offense, punishable by many years in prison.  It should NEVER be allowed "FOR ANY REASON".

Considering their lifespan, and rate of reproduction and survival, it's unsustainable.  Raise a cow, pig, sheep, chicken cat or dog for I care and use a whaling spear on it if you like.

Marine mammals should be left alone. But its a classic case of human history. We destroy everything we touch.

I'm absolutely against whaling.

The biggest problem that anti-whaling projects have is that the whalers don't have alternative source of food (in northern region), or in japanese and several other more developed areas, alternative job. Those people won't leave their job and go unemployed, this is what we need to fight. We have to offer other jobs that don't hurt the whales (or another animals) that give them enough money (or food) to live.
