The monomers of nucleic acids are called nucleotides.  DNA contains guanine, adenine, thymine, and cytosine, while RNA contains uracil instead of thymine.  Nucleotides are composed of a purine or pyrimidine, a five-carbon sugar, and a phosphate group.  The purines and pyrimidines form the "spokes" of the double helix when paired with their complementary nucleotide, and the sugars and phosphates form the backbone.

The monomers of nucleic acids, like DNA and RNA, are nucleotides. bases of nucleotides are split into purines and pyrimidines. the purines are adenine and guanine; the pyrimidines are thymine, cytosine, and uracil. adenine binds to thymine in DNA and Uracil in RNA, and cytosine binds to guanine in both DNA and RNA. These subunits are the little sticks connecting the swirly ribbon sides of the DNA. if you really want to know, that swirly bit is a 5-carbon sugar and the subunits are bound to the sugar by a phosphate.
