Please help, I've got a virus on the family computer. What can I do?

It's got Norton 2006 premier on it but someone has downloaded something called ''smilebox'' and now the computer won't even turn on. When I turn it on there is a black screen that says NTLDR is missing. Press ctrl alt delete to restart. The same thing happens when I do.

How can I reboot it if it won't even turn on?

Please help

  1. turn it of at the plug and then get the computer tech people in

  2. I tried a couple of alternative tacks to your problem which looks rather nasty. I went to  www.hoaxslayer and searched ctrl alt delete and it is this that has done the damage, not the original download. The hoax message is apparently often hidden in fake e cards and it would appear that smilebox is a genuine e card company but the original message may have been purporting to come from them. I would suggest you get on to the hoaxslayer site and read the articles for yourself. Also you may need to take your computer to an expert as a lot of people have been caught by this nasty little scam

  3. You should receive Malware removal support from a site like http://geekpolice.net/ if you have a virus or spyware.

I recommended it because they provide real fast support and a cure is guaranteed.

  4. put in the system restore cd re register it go 2 www.download.com install avast antivirus and spybot search and destroy

  5. boot up computer, press F12 or which ever key you use to access your boot up menu screen.  select cd/dvd drive.  **be sure to have your restoration cd in your cd/dvd rom.  from there it should load up and you'd want to delete everything from the harddrive *erase (all partitions) and reinstall all software --> primarily windows.

  6. The easiest way would bring it to a PC service.

You can't really fix this without a second PC. Or a healthy HDD.

  7. If you can reinstall your windows installation.

  11. Ensure that when you boot up NO discs or Floppies are in drives or thumb drives plugged in as your PC may be trying to boot from one of these instead of your hard drive, if it still fails to boot post here.
